The weather is changing here. Darker mornings make for a rough start to the day. I thought I’d talk about the importance of a good night’s rest for this Workout Wednesday.
Did you know that sleep is often overlooked when planning a well balanced workout program? Sleep is actually crucial for seeing the results you are working so hard at obtaining.
It is during the sleeping hours that your body releases a lot of growth hormone (helps build lean muscles). Did you know that a sleep deprived man will actually release higher levels of cortisone, breaking down the tissue rather than building it up? Interesting fact, non?
When you workout (using weight-bearing exercises) you cause tiny micro-tears in the muscle tissue. These tears repair during rest. If you are not getting an adequate amount of sleep, your body is not healing properly. Thus, making your next workout less efficient, making you more prone to injury and ultimately wearing yourself thin.
It’s also important to note that your metabolism will slow down if you don’t get enough rest. Now who wants that? Not me. I like my metabolism, thank-you.
Bottom line – WORKOUT AND REST UP. The two go hand in hand. Exercise actually helps you to regulate sleep.
It’s getting darker earlier at night now. Why not push your bedtime forward a little? Hopefully this will make it less painful to wake to the dark mornings. I’d aim for 7 or 8 hours of solid sleep a night. I feel your eye-roll. Come on – it’s something to strive for
Well – what are you waiting for? I hear your bed calling. ZZZZzzzz.
Be safe, stay healthy and have fun!
