Angel # 1 recently went away for the weekend. She participated in an overnight Brownie camp. She was gone for 2 whole nights. This was a huge step for both mom and daughter.
I’m so impressed with how well she handled herself. All week leading up to her getaway, she kept mentioning how excited and nervous she was. Little did she know, I was a bundle of nerves myself. I just calmly reminded her that it’s normal to feel anxious – all kids do. I also told her how brave she was and how proud I was of her.
The Angels have slept over with their grandparents before. They’ve just never been away from family overnight. It’s hard as a parent letting go. It’s even harder trusting your children in the care of someone else.
At the drop off, Angel # 1 quickly gave us a hug and ushered us out of there. I guess she wanted to get her weekend underway.
I shed a few tears on the walk back to the car. I didn’t sleep well the rest of the weekend. The phone rang once while she was away. I nearly jumped out of my chair. I was so nervous picking it up. I thought, “Oh no – what happened”. It was only a telemarketer Go figure!
It was nice to have Angel # 2 in the house all by herself. It was also very strange. I don’t think my house has ever been that quiet. It was eerily quiet.
By the end of the weekend, we all missed Angel # 1. When we picked her up, she was tired, dirty and had a huge smile on her face.
Overnight camp was a huge success. Angel # 1 actually cried in the car on the way home. Interestingly enough, she wasn’t crying because she had missed us or was happy to see us. She was crying because the weekend went by too fast and she wanted to stay longer.
She’s growing up so fast. Mommy has to take it one step at a time!
Be sure to share your hard mommy experiences. I would love to hear from you.
