Happy Friday. Here is today’s Friday Favourites.
Are you watching the new HBO show, The Newsroom? I’m only a couple of episodes in and I got to say – I’m hooked. Just as the title suggests, the program follows characters who work in a newsroom. So far we are seeing how they put together a news broadcast interlaced with their private lives that seem to unfold during work hours.
I think it’s great. In fact, I find the writing brilliant. I love the quick paced and witty dialogue. I love the interaction between the characters.
A number of TV critics are critcising the show. They seem to be disappointed that the program isn’t living up to its potential. They say the program presents women in positions of power in a negative light, being all neurotic and irrational. Critics don’t like how Sorkin is reliving news events from the past. They think he’s smug and arrogant. I’ve read some critics think the newsroom atmosphere is unprofessional and not like a “real” newsroom work environment.
I say SO WHAT? We are watching television after-all. Isn’t that what tuning in to fictitious storylines is all about? I know when I watch TV I want to escape. I’ve always dreamed of working in a newsroom. To me the program represents fantasy. It’s fun to become a part of the story.
I think the show is still finding its legs. God – we’ve given GIRLS a chance. Can we not do the same for The Newsroom? Apparently so – because the show has already been picked up for a second season. I guess I shouldn’t be frustrated by the critics. I always say, if someone is talking about it – then it’s not dead in the water. Plus, how can you not like Jeff Daniels.
Have a watch and get back to me!! I still think it should be on the must watch list for the summer.
See you Monday.
